Attorney-General’s Department
Responsible for Australian Government domestic response to modern slavery.
Core functions
What they do
- Regulator under the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) (the Act)
- Issues guidance materials under the Act
- Assesses and monitors compliance
- Responds to non-compliance
- Deliver the Commonwealth modern slavery statement under the Act
- Lead delivery of the National Action Plan to Combat Modern Slavery 2020-25
- Policy responsibility for modern slavery criminal laws
- Administer government grants
- Deliver national awareness raising
What they don't do
- Does not investigate allegations
- Does not make direct referrals to the Support for Trafficked People Program (STPP) or Forced Marriage Specialist Support Program (FMSSP)

Australian Federal Police
Receives and investigates modern slavery allegations.

- Investigate modern slavery allegations
- Refer individuals to the STPP and FMSSP
- Train frontline responders
- Deliver targeted community awareness raising to vulnerable cohorts
What they don't do
- Does not investigate reports of business noncompliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth)

Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner
Independent Commissioner to enhance Australia’s response to modern slavery.
Core functions
What they do
- Promote compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) and advocate for responsible business practice, including through:
- promotion of good practice resources
- Engage victims and survivors to inform anti-slavery efforts
- Advocate to government for continuous improvement in policy and practice
- Support collaboration within and across sectors in relation to addressing modern slavery
- Support and conduct research and community awareness initiatives
What they don't do
- Does not investigate modern slavery allegations
- Does not make direct referrals to STPP or FMSSP
- Does not regulate business compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) or manage complaints of non-compliance
- Does not issue legally-binding guidance

NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner
Independent Commissioner to enhance NSW’s response to modern slavery.

What they do
- Co-regulator of NSW public entities under Modern Slavery Act 2018 (NSW)
- Issues guidance and training
- Administers public register of non-compliance
- Hotline (1800 FREEDOM) for confidential assistance & support to victims
- Develop and issue codes of practice for public and private entities in addressing modern slavery risk
- Engage with survivors to promote effective policies and programs
- Deliver awareness-raising & education activities in NSW
- Advocate to the NSW Government on modern slavery issues

- Does not investigate modern slavery allegations
